Betsy's BBQ Sauce

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil

  • 2 diced sweet onions

  • 1-2 Tbsp crushed red pepper flakes (depends on how spicy you want it)

  • 3 cups ketchup 

  • 12 oz chili sauce

  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

  • 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup maple syrup

  • 1/3 cup Dijon mustard

  • 1/3 cup dark molasses

  • 1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 Tbsp liquid smoke 

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a large sauce pan over medium-low heat, sauteé onions and crushed red pepper flakes in olive oil until onions are very soft. About 10-15 minutes.

  2. Add remaining ingredients and simmer over low heat until reduced by 1/3. About 2-3 hours. 

  3. Stir often to prevent bottom from scorching. 

Keeps in the refrigerator for several months or forever in the freezer.
